Meet Cat Chiu Phillips and Matty Geez - TAP Station Case Artists

We. Are. So. Excited. We had a lot of great applications and thoroughly enjoyed seeing so much creativity! BUT in the end, there were two. We are thrilled to announce that we have selected our Station Cases artists. Their original artwork with be on display from July-December in the Lancaster Train Station. Please welcome Cat Chiu Phillips and Matty Geez! Let's get to know them.

Cat Chiu Phillips

Born in Manila, Philippines now lives in San Diego, California.
BA from University of California Riverside and my MFA from San Francisco Art Institute.

How did you find out about the station case project with Lancaster Public Art?
I found the call through publicartist.org (We think this is pretty cool.)

Have you ever done a project like this before?
Yes. I primarily work as an installation artist for public entities. This includes San Diego International Airport, Nashville International Airport for Bonarroo, City of Pasadena, Las Vegas City Hall, Atlanta Beltline, and Amelia Island in Florida.

What made you decide that you wanted to apply to have your work in one of our station cases?
The location and it’s in Lancaster, PA! (We think this is extra cool.)

What’s your favorite snack?
I’m a savory snack kinda-gal...so kettle chips and spicy peanuts! (OMG - spicy peanuts - YES!)

What else would you like us to know about you?
I am a teaching artist who has been working around the Southern California public schools for over 17 years.  I am truly passionate for the arts and when I’m not making art, I am usually talking about it! Also I am a mommy to a sweet 7 year old, Hazel, who is very art savvy and happy to accompany me to all events. (Hazel - we can't wait to see your work, too.)

Matty Geez

Originally, Long Island, NY. Currently, Philadelphia, PA. Lancaster, PA in the middle.

BFA in illustration from Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Trained through the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program in the Winter of 2015/16

How did you find out about the station case project with Lancaster Public Art?
I found out about this project through a shared post on a friends Facebook page. (Who is this rad public art advocate? We need more!)

Have you ever done a project like this before?
Over the past few years I have worked as an assistant for various public art pieces throughout the city of Philadelphia, working with independent artist groups as well as Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program. This will be the first time that a public art piece that I work on will be of my design and execution.

What made you decide that you wanted to apply to have your work in one of our station cases?
As a visual artist, especially one who is trying to break into public art, it’s difficult to find your footing with programs that tend to recycle the same artists time and time again. I have applied to many public programs as well as a few public art residencies, and this happened to be my lucky day! I want to be able to show my vibrant and biophilic sculptures to as many people as possible, and this project seemed like the perfect opportunity. On top of that, train stations act as hubs for travelers headed to new places; and I feel that my work will be an inviting first view of Lancaster City.

What’s your favorite snack?
Hands down, nachos. Forever and ever. (And ever. We're with you.)

What else would you like us to know about you?
My goal is to entice people to stop and explore the strange environments I create. Watching people interact with my sculptures and seeing the smile that comes to a viewers face is really what makes me proud of all the countless hours working in my studio. I proposed to my fiance surrounded by a desert landscape in Joshua Tree last fall, and he’s part of what inspires me to create. He helps with his mathematically oriented brain to problem solve design issues that my artistic mind can’t always comprehend. (We're crying happy tears. Congratulations!!)
